Volunteer

Volunteers make the Walk for Animals possible. Thank you for considering volunteering at this year's event on Saturday, May 2, 2020. As a volunteer you'll be part of the action, get to meet adorable animals, and play an integral role in supporting Animal Humane Society's mission to engage the hearts, hands, and minds of the community to help animals.

All Walk for Animals volunteers receive a free T-shirt when they check-in for their role on May 2.

Age requirements

Volunteers for the Walk must be 16 years of age or older.

Volunteer roles

You'll be able to choose your top three role choices on the registration form. Please note that we do our best to assign you to a preferred role, but cannot guarantee that everyone will get one of their top choices. Shift times are subject to change.

Activities and Booths, 7:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

If you’re an outgoing social butterfly this may be the role for you! Assist with the great activities and information booths stationed around the grounds and route for people and their pets, such as water sales, dog games, information tent, fun photo stations, and more! This volunteer position is outdoors, requires standing for most of the shift, and may require walking.

Guest Guide (must be 18 years or older), 6:15 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Get a front row seat to all the cute animals attending the Walk! This role is all about safety and ensuring participants are set up for success. Assist both pedestrian and vehicle traffic throughout the day. Volunteers in this role must be comfortable with being assertive and standing and walking for long periods of time.

Green Team, 7:30-10:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

If you’re passionate about the environment and want time to enjoy the Walk, this role is for you! Not only do you help reduce waste, you also get to meet thousands of adorable animals. Volunteers in this position are stationed in pairs (when possible) at designated recycle/waste stations to help educate Walkers about the importance of proper waste separation (recycle, compost, trash) and hand out dog treats to those who participate!

Walk Star Hospitality, 7 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Walk Stars are our top Walk fundraisers. Welcome Walk Stars and act as a friendly presence. Provide event information and serve as ambassadors of AHS. Walk Star Hospitality positions include: Walk Star Lounge Host, Walk Star Check-in, and Walk Star Prizes.

Welcome Wagon Support, 6 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Be the first to see the attendees and their animals! Welcome and assist attendees as they board the buses. Volunteers are paired with a staff member to provide information and resources as attendees ride the bus to the event. Comfort with dog handling and standing in a moving vehicle for extended periods of time are required.

Volunteer Escort, 6 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

Help greet fellow volunteers as they arrive! Volunteer escorts will greet and guide volunteers to their stations at the beginning of their shift. Familiarity with AHS grounds and comfort with standing and walking for long periods of time are required.

Flex Volunteers, 7:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Help out where needed on the day of the Walk.

Current Animal Humane Society volunteers may sign up for a Walk for Animals role through Volgistics.

If you have questions about a specific volunteer role, please contact our Walk for Animal Volunteer Team at 763-432-4834. Thank you!

Volunteer opportunities for groups

We're able to accommodate some small groups to volunteer. Each group member must register individually and put the name of their fellow group members, group lead, or group name in the notes section on the registration form. Groups must have all members registered by Friday, April 5 in order to be considered for placement in a role as a group. We do our best to keep groups together, however, there are only a few roles that can accommodate groups larger than three to four people so group spots fill up very quickly and will likely be full before the deadline. It's best to get your group registered as soon as possible.
